E-commerce Store Build

A Shopify store to support the market test for a new type of energy snack, and Team Kitchen's first product: Clean Fuel.

Client

Team Kitchen. Natural performance food, to help athletes be at their best. Clean Fuel, a new type of energy snack, is the company's first product.

Brief

The e-commerce store had to support a market test for Clean Fuel, to answer three questions:

  1. Will the public buy Clean Fuel?

  2. Will they buy it a second time?

  3. Will they tell their friends?

The site had to support wholesale and direct to consumer sales channels, as well as sales at events. This would allow Team Kitchen to track Clean Fuel sales against benchmarks including lifetime customer value (LTV) and repeat purchase rate.

Beyond seeding Clean Fuel with communities of athletes, Team Kitchen would do no marketing. The site had to offer the ability to track sales driven by word-of-mouth through athlete communities.

Project

A simple Shopify store offered most of the capabilities required. It was quick to build and customize, inexpensive, and could act as a data hub. Additional capabilities were easy to add as needed.

Over 24 months, Clean Fuel beat the category benchmark LTV by 200%, and the repeat purchase rate by 50%. It became the highest selling sports food product at Incycle, California’s largest chain of bike shops.

From three sampling events in New York City and LA, Clean Fuel spread through elite cycling communities in each city, and to buyers in surrounding states. Demand outstripped supply. Team Kitchen received requests from professional athletes and national teams.

Yes, people bought Clean Fuel. Team Kitchen’s next step is to scale up production, then launch Clean Fuel to a larger customer base.
